Nickel-A-Dance presents: A Tribute to Ronell JohnsonNickel-A-Dance is a free, family-friendly jazz concert series in New Orleans, celebrating the city's rich musical heritage. Founded in 1994, it features top local jazz musicians performing classic jazz, blues, and swing. Originally held at Café Brasil on Frenchmen Street, the series now takes place at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro on Sundays from 3:00--6:00 PM. The event is open to all ages and aims to make live jazz accessible to everyone. Ronell Johnson, affectionately known as , "rdquo" -> Roobone," was a celebrated New Orleans multi-instrumentalist and vocalist whose principal instrument was trombone. A gifted musician from an early age, Ronell began performing professionally at 12 and went on to master trombone, tuba, piano, and organ. A longtime member of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Ronell carried the tradition of New Orleans jazz to stages around the world, performing and collaborating with artists including Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Bonnie Raitt, My Morning Jacket, yasiin bey (Mos Def), and The Black Keys. His powerful playing, infectious energy, humor, and generosity made him a beloved figure in the New Orleans music community. Ronell was deeply committed to preserving and sharing the musical traditions of his hometown. His legacy lives on through the countless musicians and audiences he inspired---and through his many years as a featured musician at Nickel-A-Dance.
